I'm going to post a sketch, doodle, wip or some sort of artwork here as often as I can.Kelphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814245866541052726noreply@blogger.comBlogger30125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260151695117956709.post-45186066155594824242010-12-17T11:10:00.001-08:002010-12-17T11:10:55.744-08:00Thesis ThoughtsAt the suggestion of Dustwing I'm going to attempt a parallel thesis with her. I'm thinking maybe if I actually write this crap down it will help my thought process and persistence to finish. An unfortunate contradiction in my brainstorming process has come to my attention recently; I work better when I elaborate and talk things out but I always keep my mouth shut. Hence a loss of interest because my stuff ends up looking like a pile of pixel puke to me. So here goes an attempt at ungluing my lips.

The e two things I'm bouncing around for a thesis are either making concept art for an animated short or creating concept art for a simulation/point and click type game (think Sim city combined with something like Neopets). I would have to do at least character designs and environments for both. The game would require prop design as well and the short would require writing a story and making a story board . I want to use world myth and most likely I would pick Norse myth for a starting point. I don't know much about it but I want to learn it. Considering I'm also looking at the Vikings for my SCA stuff right now. I'd be killing a few birds with one stone.

I think I had more in mind for both but I can't remember it at the moment.Kelphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814245866541052726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260151695117956709.post-80874477187270425792010-09-08T20:17:00.000-07:002010-09-10T04:35:23.346-07:00A Spicy Sketchy'sThe Old Spice man paid a visit to Dr. Sketchy's this month! Kudos to our many model for some great drawing inspiration. Never thought a sketch about a bottle of soap would be much fun to draw but it was! Our contest this month was to draw Old Spice Man doing something manly....like..riding a horse, reading a book and fighting a bear all at the same time. Pretty impressive eh?

I have a few of the longer poses here for your perusal.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 291px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkQ-P9fwe9H2zh5F2EDmgPKqvhtrP4jqng4I8UgaAMSd1mLsC-M7ti3xaQhj1JHu4eeLxJsRwtSGPsxZuVgqQ_3KQrHL6QsLSl9vjsCMg5E80fr2afA2GjuuLT585c3Qtaws9gbnLaWI8h/s320/DSC03083.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514748166278901842" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 170px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaf79cnDh07xjrLJWFBcXK-EJf58vyWAyI7jmgGoRXXtsdOKF-YBVYzCSEQiipFa_diCn9UxoiCdiFBiJ2Sb51XQOx3QUgk1f0bR7SXiqwEgjAOD92N34QcYtrvLWXuQPLxUH4h5Htgaft/s320/DSC03082.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514748158528347538" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhygT7wHaf8VSrRcvlAlkrXmk9z4ZPWYiCfVeHC3ieuwabiNMY4jtYcRZBNGfKi-zXkyd3YSG6YHHPD81tC-3pnAEs_nfjcR-tU8UabPcpUiYAas_p275mYReIX5KPK5pFA__oxkEu46C3Y/s320/DSC03081.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514748150082488226" />Kelphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814245866541052726noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260151695117956709.post-78385398642953570982010-08-27T06:45:00.000-07:002010-08-27T07:00:56.154-07:00Quick on the DrawNothing like sneaking a sketch to make the long, slow job of cashiering pass a little faster. The faces are mostly done in snatches of anywhere from 2 to 8 seconds. Sometimes I get more than one snatch at a face but usually only with coworkers.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 266px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid-QHoXxwOyv7OVDaWUGTcoHhLz3OEjcY6nWEtzd6jNDne8XZDRsZxc-A9pizrdXxjktyQp1TwPnfuXyKsPKsXC6YIqtZ11koVbdNovBXWhxxyxpG512IENs3n-A7__dng_0eHheabdJ1c/s320/work+sketch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510086214666035058" />

This week I got a chance to do something I've been wanting to try for a long time! A little while back you could find blank, customizable figurines eeeverywhere. They had exhibitions in a couple local places, popped up on the web all over the place and were sold all over the place. They're still common but seem to be less popular now. Now I've tried my hand at a little pumpkin my boyfriend and I stumbled on. It's a lot of fun! Next time I do something like this I want to try adding something 3D. This one is Jack Skellington as a pumpkin as I hope you already guessed:)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 145px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCHkQV8Rm4CqKToD-_6EgdjM9iiQotN_GWTw0XcCHng6ZNHW4JSNdALibdFiqnNS94o1efGcuRzGz5AcfHrTrNBIphrPEf2B9YW2iujDlFoBy5kMEEqQz-8SCypavKbvp-XH5PDu9rJorv/s320/Painted+Jack.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510086205283082402" />Kelphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814245866541052726noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260151695117956709.post-33306986411560148812010-08-11T20:11:00.000-07:002010-08-12T13:54:29.167-07:00July Dr. Sketchy'sWe had a belly dancer from Florida Tribal Dance for Sketchy's this month. She was a great model and much fun to draw. Kudos to her and Tammy for finding her.

Speaking of Sketchy's, I get to help out with it now :). I've been thinking about asking if they needed help and lo and behold, a request for volunteers! I'm looking forward to it.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 100px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwI-IQxQifMfG0UVhB6G2lLfnHJF9XVSXzBn-_iaVF-URnQ-ceJqwA_7BNymCffSIN4kNmdbEs_NLRWwCfEjb1vYcD8r9X2kaeEcc18lZQB48UlxIDMltHGSps7gSdGXYc9H7nTYdf2oMH/s200/Sketchys+july10-5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504356474785175378" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4B9CFld6htxd9LSIAYBlTwNtmVE912zwx8FtUpnNX5NXIu_pDxMcuOR3095SmyRjIamncCA4fS6Ut48lrziDsJ365Tdqsge4kvfc5aE0xiZBT8sk7Yw8vRJTz7cNRDGAzrGnfjiSa4BDL/s200/Sketchys+july10-6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504356464055013010" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYi84B2rtb5LO4o9S6jJqHjktbRejB27iJ_xCRIbcdix9FQEbOQ56Yv8wwTMT5DTg2ChNHXXeP34SvfAeKiaqQ2L9VQFWQkYDJ6ygkn2_igoiCIivZhYuOWeWZLS7rxa2iNEjg6eU6uGCK/s200/Sketchys+july10-4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504356456958629522" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 104px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRVlDc4rmAxPDm4pyYANYJ3eVkcb3b1lEA-NrVDxcifcGfSYgmb-Cm2yLiOF4msyMzTVS4VCZiqn7sAV8gjaIMGhNyEGk9fba-H2zQrkO6NmhoqTRKxR_n7r1nL10e9J5blERMy7lAN1vE/s200/Sketchys+july10-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504356450008626114" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 136px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9w7VJObWVfF1_X4LJonra7KdQcwK_41-WwTmv7_-IjOe1j-FyeNnvfLQUELYVv0Ay7lzvczkCJUjfHWG-gIH0I5KH3yLw-HJk3UG8V1z6dif6SFZC_aDbnPiik0Qvhk5f5f5yJjLjr7rc/s200/Sketchys+july10-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504356444987143218" />Kelphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814245866541052726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260151695117956709.post-10696554649968607742010-08-06T07:39:00.000-07:002010-08-06T08:08:57.127-07:00Breakfast for DinnerHullo chums. I've been busy since the last time I posted. I learned a ton and met some awesome people (who I still miss terribly) at the Illustration Academy in KC, MO, finished a 50+ image slideshow for my family's church, and I'm nearly finished with the 30 portraits in 30 days assignment I assigned myself. That's just the art stuff!

The Academy was a brain stuffing experience that will be slowly digested over the next few months. My old teacher, George Pratt, was there and I met John English, Mark Engligh, CF Payne, Anita Kunz, Gary Kelley and Jon Foster. They are all by far the best instructors ever.

Soon after getting back my job demoted me for making too many mistakes. That might not be such a bad thing if I manage to use my time well for better things. It's still frustrating to screw up such a simple job. School will start again soon though. Surprisingly I'm actually looking forward to it. History of Illustration is my first class! Learning about classic illustrators = happy brain.

The image for today's post is a little old from last week's Ill Friday topic. Acoustic guitar played decently is always a pleasure to listen to and I was looking to kill some time. This sketch was the result. Music is so great to have on in the background when you're drawing. It's also a tiny image (sorry). This is my work in progress montage for a redesign of Frankenstein's Bride for the weekly CHOW on CA.org.

The inspiration for my take on her came a little from Halloween Horror Nights. They had a Frankenstein haunted house this year with a Steampunk theme so I figure "Oh yay, Shiny!" and started sketching on the spot. I know there are problems but at least I can say it's finished without feeling like a horrible liar. And hey, she doesn't have two left feet anymore! (Thanks to the astute observation of my boyfriend. )

I have posted the completed piece on my DeviantArt page if you're interested. http://aurengreenleaf.deviantart.com/art/Frankenstein-s-Bride-143799735Kelphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814245866541052726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260151695117956709.post-23062705020961978822009-09-24T08:01:00.000-07:002009-09-24T08:03:41.464-07:00Black River Crew
Another CA character design challenge. I had some family stuff to take care of but I'm back now. I managed to make more of a backlog of sketches now so I will have little excuse not to post.

This sketch is for a digital painting I've been working on for awhile. When I drove back and forth from Ringling to visit family I always passed by the town of Mango. It always made me think how quirky it would sound to say "I live in Mango!" Yes I am easily amused. I've wanted to sketch this for awhile but only got around to it recently. He asked me to do a piece from one of my absolute favorite series of books, the Chronicles of Narnia. I'm happy to do a piece for him anyway but that just makes it better. He wanted a scene from The Last Battle with Shift the Ape. At one point in the story the Telmarines capture a couple of the main characters and bring them to Shift who is impersonating Aslan and sitting in front of a shack. He's a smarmy little bugger. Funny thing is, whenever I read this part of the book I get the same image in my head as my boyfriend did when he listened to it.

Anyway, this is just the value study. I'm still working on the completed piece.Kelphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814245866541052726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260151695117956709.post-2926947358672283612009-07-29T11:56:00.001-07:002009-07-29T11:58:52.950-07:00July 29 - Color self sketch
Only had time to do a quick 30 minutes or so sketch before work. Traditional paint takes long so I just did a photoshop self portrait. At least it's something. I did do a gouache painting of a knife last night too I just didn't post it. Gouache is slightly easier for me than acrylic I think. Of course, I was only using greyscale for that too.Kelphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814245866541052726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260151695117956709.post-7651151972654796452009-07-25T16:21:00.001-07:002009-07-25T16:24:43.293-07:00July 25 - SquirrelI need serious work on traditional media . Argh. This tiny little painting took me the whole of Return of the Jedi to paint. There' s very little to this painting and it's only about 4x3 in. Blech. This is probably something I should do every day. It's nice to have gotten to do it thanks to KC and Mary Martin. I went to a local life drawing group this past Tuesday and it was much fun. There were more artists there for me to meet too. Bob Hague from the sketchcrawl was there and the host, Mary, had tons of oil paintings in her studio. Two others were Ann and, I think, John and the model Jenny Coyle who I actually knew from one of my VCC classes. She's a great model. Hope I get to do this again! My drawings prove I could use the practice.Kelphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814245866541052726noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-260151695117956709.post-47928823294124826512009-07-21T05:27:00.001-07:002009-07-21T05:30:55.741-07:00July 21 - Maces, Bomber Jackets and Fireflies
This was supposed to be a quick finish of a doodle out of my sketchbook from a few weeks back but it turned into a bit longer mini project because I wanted to experiment with scenery.
